Candles, Diffusers & Wax Melts

Nine o'clock arrives; the big light finally goes. A Twilight Vine woodwick candle, box of 8 Windermere wax melts or 140ml reed diffuser puts something softer in its place. The shelf begins at £4.95.

The shelf also holds a 50g Golden Glow melt bar and 150ml Windermere refill. Orders travel plain and unmarked without prices and are dispatched from Yorkshire in 1–2 days; mainland UK delivery is free above £30 or £3.95 below.

Choosing one

Three formats, and they suit different households. A reed diffuser at £21.95 needs no attention and no flame, which makes it the safest choice for someone with pets or small children. A jar candle at £21.95 runs about 150 hours and gives the light as well as the scent.

Wax melts sit in between: a box of eight at £12.95 works out around eleven pence an hour against roughly nineteen for the candle, and there is no open flame if the burner is electric.

Undecided? We put the two side by side, on our own numbers. Worth two minutes before the first light: how to stop a candle tunnelling. Buying scent for somebody else is less of a gamble than it looks — buy for the room, not the person.

A home fragrance gift set is easier to get right than a single candle, because the person opening it picks which scent to run first. Our jar candles are soy wax rather than paraffin, which burns cooler and slower — a soy candle gift bought in December is usually still going in March.

The whole scent shelf, candles and melts included, is Scent & Flame. Scent is also the first thing a new flat needs, which puts most of this range in housewarming gifts.

The burners and the wax that goes in them have their own shelf now, wax melts and oil burners, and the ones with a flame are on candles and ritual candles.

Questions we get asked

What comes in a wax melts gift set?

The format matters when the present has to fit a particular room. Wrenfold's wax options are a 50g Golden Glow bar and a box of 8 Windermere melts, within a £4.95–£27.95 range.

Which home fragrance gift should I choose?

The room has already made half the decision. The 140ml Windermere reed diffuser suits an arranged shelf, while a tall glass jar candle belongs nearer the evening; the housewarming gifts page gathers the new-home options.

Wax melts or a candle?

Melts give scent without a flame, which decides it in a house with pets or small children: a box of 8 Windermere melts is £12.95 and the 50g Golden Glow bar is £4.95. Candles here run £16.95 to £27.95. The cost-per-hour comparison.

Why does a candle burn down the middle?

The first burn sets the pattern. If it is put out before the melt pool reaches the edge, it will tunnel every time after, and no amount of later care undoes it. What the first hour needs to do.
