Choosing one

First question: do they actually have a bath? Plenty of flats do not, and it is the most common way this gift misses. If the answer is no, shower steamers at £8.95 do the same job on a shower floor.

If they do, the shelf runs from a £4.95 bath dust up to the Home Spa Set at £21.95. Between those, the wheat bags and eye pillows are for the half hour after the bath rather than the bath itself.

One caution worth passing on: heat the wheat bag by the label and never leave it under bedding — the fire services are firm about it. If you cannot tell a bomb from a bath dust, we set the seven formats side by side.

A pamper gift set is what most people are after and the hardest thing here to get wrong: a bath salts gift set, a bomb or a dust all end in the same half hour. Pick by whether they have a bath at all, then by scent.

The Home Spa is the same idea gathered into one shelf. For a hospital visit or a long recovery, get well soon gifts leans on the shower rather than the bath, and Sleep & Unwind picks up the evening after. If a wheat bag is going in the basket, the safety guidance is worth two minutes: never under the bedclothes is the rule people miss.

For the evening that ends with a candle rather than a bath, see candles and ritual candles.

Questions we get asked

How many shower steamers are in a set?

A quick shower leaves little room for guesswork. Kick Start Shower Steamers come as a set of 6, while the Zen Shower Steamers come as a set of 4.

What else can go with shower steamers?

Some parcels need something waiting outside the shower too. This £4.95–£29.95 shelf includes eye pillows, lavender wheat bags, 190g bath dust and a gift pack of 7 bath-salt vials. The get well soon gifts page narrows that idea to a bedside parcel.

What works if they only have a shower?

Shower steamers — Zen in a set of 4 at £12.95, Kick Start in a set of 6 at £13.95 — plus whipped soap at £8.95 and the soap sponge at £9.95. Bath dust, bombs, fizzers and salts all need standing water. Which format does what.

Can the wheat bags go in the microwave?

Yes, and the heating time on the bag's own label is the one to follow rather than a rule of thumb. Stand a cup of water in the microwave with it. The rest of the safety guidance.
