What to write in a wedding card: 60 messages that aren't clichés

A blank ivory wedding card with a fountain pen and a white soap rose

You have never met her partner and the wedding is on Saturday. The card is bought, the inside cover is blank, and the pen suddenly weighs a kilo.

Here are sixty lines that work, sorted by how well you know the couple, so you can steal honestly rather than paraphrase a search result badly.

In short. The reliable wedding card formula is three sentences: name the day, wish them something specific, sign warmly. "So happy we got to see this. Wishing you a home full of slow Sundays. All our love, J & M." Under twenty-five words, no journey and no soulmates — and it reads better than most poems.

Why specific beats poetic

Almost every disappointing wedding card fails the same way: it reaches for scale. A lifetime of happiness, a love that never fades, the beginning of forever. These are impossible to picture, which is why they slide off.

A wish the couple can see — a home that always smells of something good, arguments that stay short, Sunday mornings with nowhere to be — lands because it puts an image in their heads. It also proves a person wrote it. That is most of what a card is for.

The three mistakes

Writing about yourself. A paragraph about how much you will miss the single version of your friend is a card about you. One line of shared history is charm; three is a eulogy.

Advice. Nobody has ever wanted marriage advice from a card, least of all on the day. If you must, make it a joke about the thermostat.

Leaving it to the day. Cards written at the venue read like cards written at the venue. Write it at the kitchen table with the pen you like, and put it in your coat the night before.

If the gift is still open, the wedding shelf starts at £5.95 and holds keepsake bouquets that outlast the flowers on the table. Boxed sets for two are on the boxed sets shelf from £16.95, and a pair of candles from the candle shelf is the quiet version of the same idea. For something that keeps, the soap flower bouquets start at £2.95 a stem and still look like the day in a year's time. Orders leave Yorkshire in one to two working days, in a plain unmarked parcel with no prices inside.

Common questions

What is a nice message to write in a wedding card?

Three sentences: name the day, wish something specific, sign warmly. Specific beats poetic — "a home full of slow Sundays" outperforms "a lifetime of happiness" because the couple can picture it. Keep it under twenty-five words and it will read as sincere rather than copied.

What is a good short wedding quote?

The shortest that still lands: "With love on your wedding day." One step up: "May you always choose each other." If the couple is bookish, a single line from a poem they already love beats any famous quote chosen by a stranger — which is what a generic quote is.

What can I say instead of congratulations for a wedding?

"So happy for you both", "what a joy to witness", "every good thing to you both", or simply "hooray". All four carry the warmth without the word. In some traditions congratulating the bride was thought poor form, which is part of why the alternatives have always existed.

Do you sign a wedding card from both of you?

If you are attending as a couple, yes — one message, both names, the person with better handwriting holding the pen. If only one of you knows them well, write it in your own voice and add "and Sam sends love" rather than pretending at a joint sentiment.

Should the card go with the gift or in the post?

With the gift if you are handing it over, in the post if the present is being delivered. Nothing we send carries a card or a note, so a card that has to travel needs to travel separately — worth knowing before the day rather than after. Our general gift-card guide covers every other occasion this year will produce, and the list by occasion covers the gift itself.

A note on sources

The sixty lines are ours, written for this page rather than collected from elsewhere, which is why none of them appears on the first four pages of a search. There is nothing here to cite: no authority exists on what to write to your own friend, and the etiquette point about congratulating the bride is a tradition we have flagged as a tradition rather than dressed up as a rule.
