How a backflow incense burner works

Smoke goes up. That's the first thing anyone knows about smoke, which is why a backflow burner looks like a conjuring trick the first time you see one — the smoke pours down the tower, gathers in the pool at the bottom and sits there like water.

There's no trick. There's a hole.

In short. A backflow cone is hollow. Smoke travels down the channel, cools, and cool smoke is denser than the air around it — so it falls. Ordinary cones are solid and will never do this. A cone runs about 30 minutes. Ventilate the room while it burns, as GOV.UK advises for any indoor combustion (COMEAP).

Why does the smoke fall instead of rising?

Because it has cooled by the time it gets to the bottom. A backflow cone has a channel running from the top down to its base, and it sits over a matching hole in the burner. Most of the smoke rises as usual; some is drawn down that channel instead, losing heat on the way. Cool smoke is denser than warm room air, so it sinks and keeps sinking until it runs out of tower.

That's the whole mechanism. No electricity, no fan, nothing to plug in — which is why a backflow burner works just as well in a power cut as it does on a Tuesday.

Why has my backflow burner stopped cascading?

Four things account for nearly every failed waterfall, and three of them take seconds to fix. In our experience the first is far and away the most common: someone buys a beautiful burner, uses the cones already in the cupboard, and concludes the burner is faulty.

  • Wrong cone. Ordinary incense cones are solid. They burn upwards and will not cascade, whatever the burner cost. The pack has to say backflow.
  • Cone not seated. The hole in the cone and the hole in the burner have to line up. A cone sitting proud of the recess sends everything at the ceiling.
  • Draught. Falling smoke is a delicate thing. An open window, a passing radiator or someone walking through will lift it clean off the tower.
  • Not lit through. Let the tip glow properly, then blow the flame out. A half-lit cone smoulders and never makes enough smoke to fall.

A cone burns for around thirty minutes, so there's time to move the burner somewhere stiller and watch it settle rather than giving up on it. If a stick suits you better, the holder does more work than the incense; either way the surface rules are the ones that apply to candles.

Do you need special cones for a backflow burner?

Yes, and this is the single most common disappointment. Backflow cones are manufactured hollow; standard cones are not, and no amount of positioning will change what a solid cone does. Burner and cones are also sold separately almost everywhere, so a burner bought on its own does nothing at all on the day it arrives.

Unfragranced backflow cones are the cheap refill — a tub of roughly 45 for £4.95, and they exist to make smoke rather than scent. Scented ones are a different proposition. Which backflow burner should you buy first?

Where should you stand it, and does the room need airing?

On something heatproof, away from anything that catches, and out of the draught you were about to put it in — a backflow incense burner not working is nearly always a burner standing in moving air. Ash falls with the smoke, so a burner on a bare shelf will mark it eventually — a tile, a saucer or a coaster solves that permanently.

Airing the room matters more than people assume. Incense is a combustion source, and the UK government's advice on indoor air quality is to keep the home well ventilated when burning candles or incense — trickle vents, mechanical ventilation, or an open window where that's practical (COMEAP response to the Air Quality Expert Group, GOV.UK).

There's a small irony there: a draught ruins the waterfall, and ventilation is what you want afterwards. Light it in a still room, then open a window when the cone has finished.

Common questions

How long does a backflow cone burn?

Around thirty minutes. That's a cone, not a tub — a tub of roughly 45 unfragranced cones therefore holds something in the region of twenty hours of use, spread over as many evenings as you like.

Can I use normal incense cones in a backflow burner?

No. Normal cones are solid, so the smoke has no channel to travel down and simply rises. The burner isn't broken; the cone is the wrong shape.

Why is my smoke going sideways?

Almost always a draught. Move it away from windows, doors and radiators, and give it a minute to settle before deciding it doesn't work.

Do backflow burners smell of smoke?

Unfragranced cones smell of burning, because that's what they are. Charcoal-free scented cones give a cleaner burn, which is why we stock the lavender ones.

Is it safe to burn indoors?

Treat it as you would a candle: heatproof surface, nothing flammable nearby, never left unattended, and ventilate the room. GOV.UK advice on indoor air quality asks for ventilation whenever candles or incense are burned indoors.
